Welcome to the homepage of Clonmel & Kilsheelan Coursing Club.
Clonmel & Kilsheelan Coursing Club was first mentioned in the Greyhound Stud Book in 1898. One of 89 clubs affiliated to the Irish Coursing Club, our first official fixture is recorded to have taken place in 1911. The prestigious Tipperary Cup, the centre-piece of the club’s annual coursing meeting, was first run in 1916, when it was a 64-dog stake won by Boy’s Hurrah, making the Tipperary Cup the second-longest running stake in Irish coursing, surpassed in age by only the Irish Cup itself.
A total of eleven greyhounds have triumphed up our famous coursing stretch at Ballyglasheen en route to victory at the National Coursing Meeting at Powerstown the following February, most recently, 2006 Oaks winner Mountain Guest.
In 2008 we undertook a complete resurfacing of our field and we are confident that the result is second to none, details of which can be seen by clicking here. It has received very favourable comment from all who have had runners at our meetings since.
This year we have added an all-weather gallop for the benefit of our members. Opening hours are seasonal, and updated regularly on the Latest News pages. New members are always welcome.
As the comment so often goes, “good hares make for good coursing” and we are lucky in Clonmel & Kilsheelan to have a four acre enclosure where the hares are fed and watered under the supervision of a team vastly experienced in the area of hare husbandry. After all, as with every coursing club, the hares are always the most important aspect of our meeting.
We at Clonmel & Kilsheelan Coursing Club are very proud of our sport and the contribution we make in protecting and promoting the welfare of the hare in the South Tipperary region.
